Tropical glacier reconstructions during the Last Glacial Maximum in Costa Rica

چکیده

Numerous high elevation tropical mountains around the world show evidence of past glacial activity during Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Cerro Chirripó in Costa Rica exhibits paleoglacial landforms such as cirques, moraine deposits and polished striated bedrock surfaces. We used aerial imagery (1:25000) contour lines to develop a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for LGM. determined paleo-equilibrium line altitudes (paleo-ELAs) using Area-Altitude Balance Ratio (AABR) LGM Rica. Additionally, Generalized Linear (GLM) was performed statistically analyze paleoglacier volumes ice thickness combined with ten land surface parameters (LSP). Our results identified thirty-one paleoglaciers covering an area 28.26 km2 global LGM, maximum 178 meters Chirripó, total volume 13863 × 105 m3 mean paleo-ELA 3490 meters. In addition, Area Slope were LSP highest statistical correlation explain volumes, while Diurnal Anisotropic Heating best thickness. As one first studies mountain environments, this work expands geographic scope glacier reconstructions expansion

The tropical lapse rate steepened during the Last Glacial Maximum

The gradient of air temperature with elevation (the temperature lapse rate) in the tropics is predicted to become less steep during the coming century as surface temperature rises, enhancing the threat of warming in high-mountain environments. However, the sensitivity of the lapse rate to climate change is uncertain because of poor constraints on high-elevation temperature during past climate s...

Tropical climate at the last glacial maximum inferred from glacier mass-balance modeling.

Model-derived equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs) of former tropical glaciers support arguments, based on other paleoclimate data, for both the magnitude and spatial pattern of terrestrial cooling in the tropics at the last glacial maximum (LGM). Relative to the present, LGM ELAs were maintained by air temperatures that were 3.5 degrees to 6.6 degrees C lower and precipitation that ranged from 63...

Early local last glacial maximum in the tropical Andes.

The local last glacial maximum in the tropical Andes was earlier and less extensive than previously thought, based on 106 cosmogenic ages (from beryllium-10 dating) from moraines in Peru and Bolivia. Glaciers reached their greatest extent in the last glacial cycle approximately 34,000 years before the present and were retreating by approximately 21,000 years before the present, implying that tr...

Modelling the diversion of erratic boulders by the Valais Glacier during the last glacial maximum

In this study, a modelling approach was used to investigate the cause of the diversion of erratic boulders from Mont Blanc and southern Valais by the Valais Glacier to the Solothurn lobe during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Using the Parallel Ice Sheet Model, we simulated the ice flow field during the LGM, and analyzed the trajectories taken by erratic boulders from areas with characteristic ...

The Last Glacial Maximum.

We used 5704 14C, 10Be, and 3He ages that span the interval from 10,000 to 50,000 years ago (10 to 50 ka) to constrain the timing of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in terms of global ice-sheet and mountain-glacier extent. Growth of the ice sheets to their maximum positions occurred between 33.0 and 26.5 ka in response to climate forcing from decreases in northern summer insolation, tropical Pac...
